Pump Supply & Repair Group - Major Pump Sales

One of the two SPP KP15 Cooling Water Booster Pumps supplied in July to a Pharmaceutical Company. The 8" Cast Iron End Suction pumps have a designed duty of 384 m3/hr @ 30m: they were fitted with EFF1 Brook Crompton Motors and spark proof coupling guards.

Pump Supply & Repair Group worked closely with the end user and the Project Consultants to ensure that all aspects of the process data sheets were met. The SPP pumps were factory performance tested and both pumps achieved in excess of 86% efficiency ensuring that the customer benefits from year on year energy savings.

Pump Supply & Repair Group - Condition Monitoring

Pump Supply & Repair Group has been contracted by a large chemical plant to carry out regular Condition Monitoring testing of around 50 pumps critical to their operation. On a recent visit, one pump was found to have progressively deteriorated to an extent that the vibration readings were at an "Alarm" level. On our recommendation the customer removed the pump for overhaul, as part of their planned maintenance program, replacing it with a spare from stores.

Example graphs showing such deterioration can be downloaded here

The cost of repair before catastrophic failure was only hundreds of pounds: if the pump had failed in service, then not only would the repair to the pump have run to several thousand pounds, but the customer would have incurred significant loss of revenue due to downtime of the plant.

Belzona Application - Venturi Scrubber

Prior to coating

Pump Supply & Repair Group has recently undertaken the Belzona application of a Venturi Acid Neutralisation Scrubber. Previously the scrubber had been manufactured from Hastelloy C22 material which was expensive to manufacture and was also still susceptible to corrosion from the media. The customer wanted to change the substrate to carbon steel and apply a Belzona polymeric coating to protect against acid corrosion.

The coating selected not only had to withstand the corrosion properties of the acid but also had to withstand high operating temperature of up to 100°C. While protective coatings can be successfully used at moderate temperatures, migration through the coating readily occurs at temperatures above 90°C. This gives rise to blistering and premature breakdown.

Prior to coating

During coating process

We proposed to apply Belzona 1392 ceramic HT metal to the scrubber By combing a unique blend of inorganic erosion resistant reinforcing agents with a radically new densely cross linked heat resistant polymer. Belzona 1392 provides excellent protection against erosion and corrosion in high temperature environments which has a temperature range -40°C (-40°F) to 200°C (392°F) and a constant immersion temperature of 120°C (248°F).

The internal of the unit, external of the nozzles and also all internal welds were grit blasted.

All wetted parts were then coated with a two coat Belzona 1392 HT Metal.

On completion all coated areas were wet sponge tested to check for defects.

The external of the scrubber was spray painted hammerite grey prior to being packed ready for dispatch.

The above unit was carried out during the customers scheduled breakdown period and was carried out over a five day period.

The scrubber is now in operation and under trials.

Pump Supply & Repair Group - Major Pump Sales

During the last quarter of the year Pump Supply & Repair Group delivered pumps from two of Europe's largest pump suppliers, KSB Ltd and Clyde Pumps (formerly Weir Pumps).

The Horizontal Split Casing unit was a SDBH 300/350 bares shaft pump for a Cooling Water Application at one the country's leading Pharmaceutical Companies,

whereas the two MTC B 50 7 Stage Horizontal Multistage Pumpsets were for Boiler Feed Applications.

Both jobs were closely project managed by the New Pump Sales Team at PSRG to ensure that the both orders were delivered on time and in the case of the Clyde Pump two weeks early.

This goes to demonstrate that Pump Supply & Repair Group can not only work closely with the Major Pump Manufacturers but also secure orders with Blue Chip Companies even in the current climate where price is a major driver for all companies.

Gearbox Reconditioning

The gearbox was delivered to Pump Supply & Repair Group partially seized after running with insufficient lubrication.

At strip down it was also discovered that the main gear hub had fractured

The remainder of the unit had all parts examined for damage and wear with images taken showing the extent of the damage.

Consumable parts were itemised for replacing; these included bearings, oil seals and gaskets.

Any damage to the shafts was assessed for suitability with action for correction and all critical dimensions were recorded for rebuild purposes.

The main hub was replicated and the gear ring reconditioned.

During assembly, all parts were set for axial and radial alignment.

Full rebuild completed and the unit was returned to the customer.

Another demonstration of how Pump Supply & Repair Group are able to undertake repairs and servicing to any type of rotating equipment, from parts replication through to full overhauls.

Ash Crusher Repair

Pump Supply & Repair Group have recently undertaken the repair of a coal ash crusher on behalf of a UK power station. The crusher was found to be in a poor condition after many years of service. Impact damage was found to the rotor hubs which needed to be corrected by carrying weld repairs using stelite impact HS360 rod.

Other areas of concern included wear to the shaft locations and wear to the gland sleeves. these areas were spiral welded and machined. Both gears were also found to be worn with excessive clearance found between the teeth. New gears were manufactured and fitted then new side sections were fabricated and fitted to badly eroded areas.

Internals and externals of the hopper box were grit-blasted. The unit was then rebuilt with new copper bearing assemblies, new sets of packing rings and new gasket & shim sets.

We have modified the main problem area which was the primary cause of bearing failure - gland leakage - fitted new labyrinth seals and large shaft throwers to deflect debris away from bearings.

The unit was spray painted and then dispatched to the customer and is now back in operation.

Pump Supply & Repair Group - Belzona Repairs

Pump Supply & Repair Group were asked to offer advice regarding how to repair excessive corrosion to steel pipework on an exhaust steam manifold from a boiler house without replacing a complex manifold. In December 2008 the inlet flange and 1500mm of the pipe bore was coated internally in situ on site using Belzona 1511 Super High Temperature Metal to recover the surface profile, then coated with Belzona 1391 Ceramic HT Metal.

Inspection twelve months later revealed that although the coating had been attacked by cavitation caused by high pressure steam, no further damage had occurred to the pipework.

Once again, the Belzona coating has arrested the corrosion of the pipework, effectively increasing its life - additional coatings can now be applied to prolong the life further and avoid the expensive steel pipework replacement program previously carried out on this site. The repair was carried out during a three day shut down.

Industry: Facilities Management

A local Facilities Management company had a motor failure on a pump which was sent to a competitor for repair, on receiving the unit they found the motor to be beyond economical repair and also found excessive wear in the volute casing of the pump, causing the pump to be not performing as well as required. Our competitor provided a quote for a new unit.

Once the Facilities Management company realised a new pump was needed they asked PSRG to quote. We quoted a Grundfos unit which was more economically viable than the competition. Due to the cost savings on the Grundfos pumps our customer opted to replace both the duty and standby pumps on site. The two units are now installed and operational on site.

Not Just Pumps!

Saving energy in car parks

You might be forgiven for assuming that Pump Supply and Repair Group only repair and sell pumps. Nothing could be further from the truth: we are capable of under taking all manner of rotating equipment sales, site and repair activities.

We are currently in the process of upgrading all the fans for an underground car park. Discussions with the customer following the repair of a drive unit on a extractor fan found that the car park's four 4kw fans were running 24hr per day. Initially we proposed to add timing clocks to the current control panel so that the fans would be turned off when the car park was not in use. In exploring the control philosophy we found that the car park had a system of CO2 monitoring equipment which gave a 4-20ma control signal.

We are now retro-fitting wall mounted Hydrovar variable speed drives in the vicinity of the air handling units. These will be controlled via the digital output from the CO2 monitors. The less CO2 in the atmosphere, the the slower the fans run. It is estimated that with the timers and the Hydrovar the payback of the project will be less than 12 months.

Climate Change

Climate change is everyone's responsibility. Pump Supply and Repair Group are working in conjunction with a global paper products manufacturing group: together we have undertaken a program of testing now into its fourth year.

The objective of the testing was originally to identify and prioritise the replacement of liquid ring vacuum pumps which were nearing the end of their service life. The pumps benefit from a condition monitoring program which ensures mechanical reliability. In this day and age that is no longer enough: all the mill's equipment has to be reliable and efficient.

As we tested and determined that actual performance of individual pumps it became clear that by embarking on a program of repair and refurbishment, using our experience with Belzona Polymeric coatings, we would be able to reduce the number of pumps required to run the paper machine.

Towards the end of 2008 a 250kw vacuum pump was made redundant saving an estimated £26,250 in energy cost in the intervening 6 months.

"If UK manufacturing is to survive the current economic climate we all have to work smarter not just harder. Our efforts with this customer are an example to our colleagues and customers of how we can all do this." says Ian Pendleton, Pump Supply and Repair Group Managing Director.

Belzona 1321 Ceramic S

Pump: Rotary Drum

Industry: Tannery

PSRG has recently undertaken the repair of a shaft on a rotary drum on behalf of a tannery

Drum

Preparing to Profile Shaft

Mould being Fitted

Fully Repaired Shaft

  • The bearing location had worn due to the bearing taper sleeve spinning and cutting into the shaft
  • The customer could not afford to remove the equipment from his process as it could not be shut down; also the cost to remove the equipment was high due to the size of the drum
  • Using the injection molding technique the shaft was repaired in-situ
  • Prior to our Belzona technicians attending site a split mould was fabricated. The internal bore was machined to the required size of the bearing sleeve diameter
  • A profile was then cut into the shaft using the Belzona MBX tool which will leave a surface profile of 50 microns
  • Once all setting and shimming had been carried Belzona 1321 Ceramic S was then injected into holes in the mould
  • After this had cured, the mould was removed leaving the bearing sleeve location repaired

The above work was carried out over a period of two days and avoided costly repairs by taking the drum out of service

Site Services

"The Test of a Man is how he behaves in a quarrel" George Bernard Shaw 1856-1950

The test of a service provide is how they respond in an emergency, it's easy to respond and perform well when there is standby equipment and a planned maintenance program. When choosing a service provider consider how they can support you when things are not so organised. www.pumpgroup.co.uk has a can do attitude with arrangements in place to support your organisation when you're in need.

We were recently called out to a major international hotel chain. During the Friday mid afternoon check in period guests in one wing of the hotel reported problems with the cold water supply, Shower were running dangerously hot and fluctuating between hot and cold.

The Hotel was faced with closing a large percentage of the rooms, and relocating bookings to competing hotels. They would be loosing many thousands of pounds in revenue and embarrassingly sending paying customers to their rivals.

Pump Supply and Repair Group were called out and attended site within the hour, we found a discharge manifold of a booster set split and spraying water across the plant room.

To make the speediest repair it was decided to replace the whole manifold with copper compression fittings. Copper pipe is easy to cut and assemble. The booster set was up and running within a couple of hours.

During this time the hotel booked the early arriving guests into other parts of the premises, and because of the re-assurances given by our site engineer had the confidence that the rooms would be open promptly, and they were. But not before one final twist in the tail.

There are many occasions when the easy option is to say we have done all we can. But on the few occasions when you need a company that will choose the hard option please call Pump Supply and Repair Group.

Pump Supply & Repair Group secure an order to install
a high temperature CDR Pump - January 2008

Pump Supply and Repair Group have recently won an order to solve a problem application that has so far cost the customer in excess of GBP 100,000 in pump repair bills. The company will install a high-temperature stainless-steel UTS series magnetic drive pump unit supplied by CDR Pumps to handle a product at 280C. The product crystallises at low temperature, and so a steam jacket is also being supplied, specifically around the bearing arrangement to ensure the pump has not seized on start up.
The existing pumps have suffered from damage and seizure of rotating parts as a result of the operating temperature and duty conditions, with current lifetime being as low as 3-4 weeks on a site required to operate 24/7, 365 days per year.
The well proven UTS series of pump is a heavy duty magnetic drive pump available in either close or long coupled configuration, capable of transmitting powers of up to 90kW, and capable of handling temperatures up to 320C.
The design has been in manufacture for the last 12 years, and has proved to be a quality reliable pump unit for some of the most difficult applications.

The pump unit will be fully ATEX certified, and will be mounted onto the new baseplate, which as standard includes eight-point adjustment for easy alignment, and rigid foundation to ensure alignment is not compromised to extend even further the extended operational life of the pumps.

Time and Money drive most of our actions these days...

and as Facility Providers to many Major Industries we understand how wasting either commodity hits profit potential.

We were recently invited to offer quotations for replacement Condenser Circulation, Chilled Water and Primary pumps and we

  • visited site and assisted in the Systems calculations
  • sought competitive prices from five pump manufacturers
  • the selection was made on the basis of price and availability
  • with our guidance the customer considered options for Variable Speed Drives to save Energy
  • also looked at Energy Efficient Motors to keep Life Cycle Costs down on motors 15kw through to 45kw

We can assist with supply and also our On Site Services Department for installation, removal or Shut Down support
