PUMP SUPPLY & REPAIR GROUP at ACHEMA 2009, FRANKFURT, GERMANY
|
Achema is the undisputed world forum of the process industry and trend-setting for PUMP technology and in May of 2009 our personnel attended the exhibition to co-host the Rheinhütte stand. Pump Supply and Repair Group have been Rheinhütte's exclusive UK distributor for some years now and are enjoying increased year on year sales growth. |
The stand displayed the range of standardised chemical pumps, magnetic drive pumps, vertical chemical pumps, propeller circulating pumps, vacuum pumps and submerged motor pumps for the chemical process engineering, petrochemicals, metallurgy, gas and liquid gas technology.
Material designs in metal, plastic, plastic lining and technical ceramic.
Made-to-measure solutions for all pumping tasks
The Rheinhütte Pumps Division of FRIATEC AG is earning an exclusive position among pump manufacturers - here the solution of pumping problems for extremely critical media is the core expertise.
|
Whether for molten salts, liquid sulphur or even highly concentrated hot acids the company's products are in demand throughout the world. The company is geared to niche markets and the company's knowledge is based on materials know-how. This is increasingly proving to be an extreme advantage, as Rheinhütte is called upon more and more frequently for complete solutions as a specialist in difficult cases. |

Industry: Facilities Management
|
A local Facilities Management company had a motor failure on a pump which was sent to a competitor for repair, on receiving the unit they found the motor to be beyond economical repair and also found excessive wear in the volute casing of the pump, causing the pump to be not performing as well as required. Our competitor provided a quote for a new unit. |
|
Once the Facilities Management company realised a new pump was needed they asked PSRG to quote. We quoted a Grundfos unit which was more economically viable than the competition. Due to the cost savings on the Grundfos pumps our customer opted to replace both the duty and standby pumps on site. The two units are now installed and operational on site.

Not Just Pumps!
Saving energy in car parks
|
You might be forgiven for assuming that Pump Supply and Repair Group only repair and sell pumps. Nothing could be further from the truth: we are capable of under taking all manner of rotating equipment sales, site and repair activities. |
We are currently in the process of upgrading all the fans for an underground car park. Discussions with the customer following the repair of a drive unit on a extractor fan found that the car park's four 4kw fans were running 24hr per day. Initially we proposed to add timing clocks to the current control panel so that the fans would be turned off when the car park was not in use. In exploring the control philosophy we found that the car park had a system of CO2 monitoring equipment which gave a 4-20ma control signal.
We are now retro-fitting wall mounted Hydrovar variable speed drives in the vicinity of the air handling units. These will be controlled via the digital output from the CO2 monitors. The less CO2 in the atmosphere, the the slower the fans run. It is estimated that with the timers and the Hydrovar the payback of the project will be less than 12 months.

Climate Change
|
Climate change is everyone's responsibility. Pump Supply and Repair Group are working in conjunction with a global paper products manufacturing group: together we have undertaken a program of testing now into its fourth year. The objective of the testing was originally to identify and prioritise the replacement of liquid ring vacuum pumps which were nearing the end of their service life. The pumps benefit from a condition monitoring program which ensures mechanical reliability. In this day and age that is no longer enough: all the mill's equipment has to be reliable and efficient. |
|
As we tested and determined that actual performance of individual pumps it became clear that by embarking on a program of repair and refurbishment, using our experience with Belzona Polymeric coatings, we would be able to reduce the number of pumps required to run the paper machine.
Towards the end of 2008 a 250kw vacuum pump was made redundant saving an estimated £26,250 in energy cost in the intervening 6 months.
"If UK manufacturing is to survive the current economic climate we all have to work smarter not just harder. Our efforts with this customer are an example to our colleagues and customers of how we can all do this." says Ian Pendleton, Pump Supply and Repair Group Managing Director.

The Pump Centre Exhibition - Runcorn, Cheshire, 2 June 2009
Hosted by: ESR Technology
|
In early June we attended the above exhibition and had a stand presenting our services. The exhibition has worked well over the years for PSRG, and is improving year upon year, with both the number of visitors and companies attending. This is a great way for existing and new customers to come and attend, have a chat with our technical engineers and sales personnel. |
We have found over the years that the customers who have attended have benefited greatly by finding solutions to problems they may have been having in the past, planning for the future and making sure they are getting the most out of the numerous services we have to offer.
This year there were in excess of 50 Exhibitors exhibiting along with conferences running throughout the day.

Belzona 1321 Ceramic S
Pump: Rotary Drum
Industry: Tannery
PSRG has recently undertaken the repair of a shaft on a rotary drum on behalf of a tannery
|
|
Drum |
Preparing to Profile Shaft |
|
|
Mould being Fitted |
Fully Repaired Shaft |
- The bearing location had worn due to the bearing taper sleeve spinning and cutting into the shaft
- The customer could not afford to remove the equipment from his process as it could not be shut down; also the cost to remove the equipment was high due to the size of the drum
- Using the injection molding technique the shaft was repaired in-situ
- Prior to our Belzona technicians attending site a split mould was fabricated. The internal bore was machined to the required size of the bearing sleeve diameter
- A profile was then cut into the shaft using the Belzona MBX tool which will leave a surface profile of 50 microns
- Once all setting and shimming had been carried Belzona 1321 Ceramic S was then injected into holes in the mould
- After this had cured, the mould was removed leaving the bearing sleeve location repaired
The above work was carried out over a period of two days and avoided costly repairs by taking the drum out of service

We were recently called out to a major international hotel chain. During the Friday mid afternoon check in period guests in one wing of the hotel reported problems with the cold water supply, Shower were running dangerously hot and fluctuating between hot and cold.
The Hotel was faced with closing a large percentage of the rooms, and relocating bookings to competing hotels. They would be loosing many thousands of pounds in revenue and embarrassingly sending paying customers to their rivals.
Pump Supply and Repair Group were called out and attended site within the hour, we found a discharge manifold of a booster set split and spraying water across the plant room.
To make the speediest repair it was decided to replace the whole manifold with copper compression fittings. Copper pipe is easy to cut and assemble. The booster set was up and running within a couple of hours.
During this time the hotel booked the early arriving guests into other parts of the premises, and because of the re-assurances given by our site engineer had the confidence that the rooms would be open promptly, and they were. But not before one final twist in the tail.
There are many occasions when the easy option is to say we have done all we can. But on the few occasions when you need a company that will choose the hard option please call Pump Supply and Repair Group.

Pump Supply & Repair Group secure an order to install
a high temperature CDR Pump - January 2008
| Pump Supply and Repair Group have recently won an order to solve a problem application that has so far cost the customer in excess of GBP 100,000 in pump repair bills. The company will install a high-temperature stainless-steel UTS series magnetic drive pump unit supplied by CDR Pumps to handle a product at 280C. The product crystallises at low temperature, and so a steam jacket is also being supplied, specifically around the bearing arrangement to ensure the pump has not seized on start up. | |
| The existing pumps have suffered from damage and seizure of rotating parts as a result of the operating temperature and duty conditions, with current lifetime being as low as 3-4 weeks on a site required to operate 24/7, 365 days per year. |
| The well proven UTS series of pump is a heavy duty magnetic drive pump available in either close or long coupled configuration, capable of transmitting powers of up to 90kW, and capable of handling temperatures up to 320C. |
|
The design has been in manufacture for the last 12 years, and has proved to be a quality reliable pump unit for some of the most difficult applications. The pump unit will be fully ATEX certified, and will be mounted onto the new baseplate, which as standard includes eight-point adjustment for easy alignment, and rigid foundation to ensure alignment is not compromised to extend even further the extended operational life of the pumps. |
